The State Government has announced dismissing the 70:30 region-wise formula for admissions in medical colleges in Maharashtra. According to the formula, there was a 70% reservation for locals from that region in medical colleges and 30% from the rest of the state.
Medical Education Minister Amit Deshmukh now announced that instead of the 70:30 quota there would be ‘one Maharashtra, one merit’ that would be followed for admissions in medical courses in the state.
Students and parents in Maharashtra had long been demanding the scrapping of the 70:30 formula for admission in medical courses. Students from the Marathwada and Vidarbha regions of Maharashtra had to suffer the most because these regions had a lesser number of medical colleges as compared to other areas.
In an announcement made in the state Assembly, the minister said that now the admissions would be based on the results of the students who have appeared for NEET 2020.
NEET 2020 is scheduled to be conducted on September 13, 2020. However, the students are still protesting demanding postponing the entrance.
