The Karnataka government has decided to open the paramedical and medical colleges from December 1, 2020. The decisions came after the institutes have been shut for more than 9 months due to the imposition of severe lockdown because of the outbreak of Covid-19.

AYUSH, Nursing, and Pharmacy colleges in addition to medical and paramedical colleges will resume from December 1.

The institutes have been asked to strictly observe all covid-19 guidelines as issued by the state government and also follow social distancing norms.

Previously, the state government had announced that the MBBS exams for the final year students will be postponed. The exams which were previously scheduled to be conducted in January 2021 will now be conducted in February and March 2021.

While the exam for first-year students will begin from February 8, 2021, the exams of 2nd and 3rd-year students will be conducted between March 2 and March 23, 2021.

The decision was taken after the students organized protests laying their demands before the government.

A Twitter campaign was started online by the students demanding postponement of the January exam.

More than 25,000 medical students took part in the protests. The students complained that they had insufficient time for the preparation of exams.

In addition, online classes have proved to be ineffective so far and the learning outcomes through them were very low.

A lack of practical knowledge and exposure was also detrimental. In such a situation, the students had no choice but to depend on themselves. For this, they would need more time for preparation.

After the Twitter campaign, AIDSO Karnataka met with the authorities of Rajiv Gandhi University Health Sciences and submitted a memorandum that demanded the postponement of the examinations.
