The Karnataka Common Entrance Test (KCET) 2020 will be given as scheduled on 30 and 31 July. On 29 July, the Karnataka High Court ruled in favour of carrying out the examination.

Almost 200,000 students, including 1,800 from neighbouring states, will take the KCET. The test will be given across 497 centres in the state by the Karnataka Examinations Authority. The KCET is vital for admission to engineering, yoga, farm science and pharma courses.

The court rejected an interim plea for staying the examination due to the pandemic. A division bench led by Justice Aravind Kumar stated that the rights and interests of students could not be overlooked.

The court mentioned that the students were prepared for the examination, as they had already downloaded their hall tickets. The fact that the students themselves were not in court also showed that they were intent on taking the examination.

However, the court made it clear that no candidate was to be barred from taking the examination. “All logistical support shall be extended by the state to ensure candidates who require medical attention, transportation, food and other facilities are provided,” the court said.

The court also said that if a student does not inform the concerned authorities about their coronavirus status in advance, or does not produce a medical certificate of fitness, they should not be barred from taking the examination.

The court further directed authorities to provide transportation and other logistical support to students as well as accompanying parents, whenever required, such as in containment zones. Instructions have been given to the police to allow students and accompanying parents to travel after their hall tickets have been inspected.
