December 17, 2021: Karnataka Government is now planning to upgrade the state-run prestigious institute, Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) to the level of Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). At present, engineering colleges in the state are affiliated with VTU.
As per the announcement made by Karnataka State Higher Education Minister C N Ashwathnaraya on Wednesday, December 15, 2021, the state government will upgrade all engineering universities which are affiliated with Visvesvaraya Technological University, VTU.
In the upgrade plan of the Karnataka Government, the first university in the state which will start the process within the campus will be VTU in Belagavi. The action plan for the same is expected to be prepared within a month.

While talking about the initiative of the state government, Higher Education Minister C N Ashwathnarayan said, “The government has asked VTU Vice-Chancellor Prof Karisiddappa to prepare an action plan within a month to enable this".
As of now, according to the action plan prepared by the VTU Vice-Chancellor Prof Karisiddapp, the transformation of all universities will be done under a 10-year duration. The step has been taken to offer better education facilities and quality education to students.
Adding to this, the Higher Education Minister stated that with this development, all state-run universities which are affiliated with VTU will have modern and high teaching facilities on the campus ground.
“This would get students aspiring to get engineering education attracted to these colleges. The government is also favorable in granting more autonomy and establishing governing boards to look after their management,” Ashwathnarayan said.
Following the statement, he added that under this transformation plan, a total of 17 government-run engineering colleges in Karnataka will be facilitated with world-class technical education.
Karnataka Government: Plans to Upgrade UVCE to IIT Standards
At par with top IITs in India, the government aims to develop and upgrade the facilities of its state-run 100 years old university; University Visvesvaraya Engineering College (UVCE). To note, UVCE is one of the oldest engineering colleges in the country and the fifth in the state.
It offers engineering programs under the Department of Electronics & Communication Engineering, Architecture, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering and Electrical & Electronics Engineering.
UVCE is affiliated to Bangalore University and recognized by the AICTE. For UVCE Admission, it accepts GATE and Karnataka CET Entrance Examination scores.
