Joshi-Bedekar College has received autonomous status, becoming the first autonomous institution in Thane city. The college is famous in Thane and was established in 1969. It is managed by Vidya Prasarak Mandal that has another 12 institutes under its affiliation. 

With an autonomous status, now Joshi-Bedekar College possesses the freedom to reconstruct and design the course or syllabus from time to time, making it feasible for students in Thane city.

The college not only offers professional and vocational courses but also provides skill-oriented courses that will increase more employment opportunities.

Dr. Vijay Bedekar, Trustee, Vidya Prasarak Mandal, stated, “With the autonomous status, we have the freedom to include modern education techniques and tools that make the education process more attractive and effective. Based on the demands in the job markets and the recent trends, we shall be able to include more courses every year.”

As per the official data, the institute has been acquiring ’A’ grade accreditation for the subsequent three cycles.

Meanwhile, an autonomous college has the full freedom to determine and follow its courses of study and syllabus. It can also work on redesigning existing courses to suit the local needs and include more skill-oriented courses as per the job requirements available in the industry. Such colleges also have the advantage to modify the methods of assessment and hold their own examinations and announce results.

The University Grants Commission (UGC), a statutory body, is in charge to maintain standards of teaching, examination, and research in university education, under the government of India. 

According to UGC’s criteria, a college appealing autonomy must be accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), with a minimum of ‘A’ grade for over three cycles of accreditation. However, if the NAAC score is equal to or above 3.51, the institute can be announced as an autonomous institute without the formal visit by UGC’s expert council.
