JEE Main

New Delhi: The Bombay High Court’s hearing of a PIL filed in support of the removal of the 75% eligibility requirement from the Joint Entrance Examination (Mains) that was scheduled for today, April 13 has been postponed to April 24, 2023.

According to the petition, the requirement of 75% for JEE Main eligibility is unfair to the students because it does not accurately represent their skills. Since the candidate's scores do not accurately reflect their actual abilities, students who did not meet the eligibility requirements (75%) for this year's exams can still achieve higher marks in the upcoming JEE Main 2023.

However, if they are not given a fair shot, it will negatively impact the results (of) lakhs of bright (students), the PIL said.

Earlier, on March 1, 2023, Chief Justice SV Gangapurwala of the Bombay High Court and Justice Sandeep V. Marne took up the case. However, the matter was postponed till a subsequent hearing on April 6, 2023, after the court ordered the government and National Testing Agency to present all pertinent records and information pertaining to the 75% qualifying requirement for the Joint Entrance Examination, JEE Main 2023.

As a result of the COVID-19 outbreak last year, the NTA lowered the 75% eligibility requirement for JEE Main candidates. Candidates can now apply for the exam if they received 75% of the points or finished in the top 20% of their Class 12 exam, as per the new regulations.

The Education Ministry has informed that they are not considering any proposal for a one-time relaxation in the eligibility criteria for JEE Main 2023. “After the verification, all the affected candidates were allowed to appear in re-examinations that were held on June 29, 2022 (Shift-2) and June 30, 2022 (Shift-1) for Session-1 and on July 30, 2022 (Shift-1) for Session-2.

Furthermore, the candidates who have passed the Class 12 or equivalent examination in 2021, 2022, or appearing in 2023 are eligible to appear in JEE (Main) – 2023 examination.

“For the school leaving batch of 2020, the JEE (Main) examination was conducted two times in 2020, four times in 2021 and two times in 2022, we have provided them sufficient opportunities to take the JEE(Main) examination”, Union Minister of State for Education Subhas Sarkar informed Lok Sabha in a written response.

Meanwhile, the JEE Main 2023 Exams session 2 is underway and will conclude on April 15, 2023. Further, the plea has also revealed that the eligibility criteria is unfair to those JEE aspirants who have cleared their exams during the COVID-19 pandemic and dropped out to prepare for the same. However, the Bombay HC was expected to announce its verdict today but now it has been postponed to April 24.
