JEE MAIN

New Delhi: Bombay High Court, in its recent hearing on April 6, 2023 , has asked the government to submit the related documents stating the details of the 75% eligibility criteria, how and from when will it be implement. It has also asked for a detailed structure of how different states will have different top 20 percentile and how that will help the students.

The next date of hearing has been declared to be on the next week after the proper documents have been submitted to the court.

In its last hearing on March 1, 2023, Bombay High Court had deferred the plea hearing on removing the 75% eligibility criteria for JEE Main 2023 to April 06, 2023. Earlier, the HC was to hear the plea on February 21, 2023, however, the court has revised the hearing dates to next month.

Informing about the update on JEE Main 2023 75% Eligibility Criteria plea, Advocate Anubha Sahai tweeted, "#JEEMain2023 matter was mentioned before Hon'ble Chief Justice of Mumbai High court for 75% criteria the court will hear it on April 06, 2023".

In the plea, the petitioner has requested the National Testing Agency (NTA) to remove the 75% eligibility criteria as the marks secured by candidates do not reflect their ability to perform in the entrance exam. It doesn’t offer students a fair chance to appear for JEE Main 2023, it added.

The plea stated, "the marks scored by candidates is not a true reflection of their actual ability therefore those students with less marks than the eligibility criteria (75%) for this year’s exams can score very high marks in the upcoming JEE Main 2023”.

Demanding the removal of criteria, students shared that "In 2022, some CBSE students could not score well due to the 30:70 criteria being introduced by the board on the day of result declaration, where students in first term were awarded marks as per 30% and in second term as per 70%”.

“Therefore, those who performed well in first term but not in second term scored less marks, some even less than 75% and also could not qualify to be in top 20 percentile in the board”, aspirants further added.

Earlier, NTA released the JEE Main 2023 information brochure, which states that students who wish to qualify for admissions through JEE Main are required to secure at least 75% marks in board exams or should be in the top 20 percentile to be eligible for the same.

Due to this, students preparing for JEE Main 2023 have demanded the authority to remove the top 20 percentile criteria and lower the JEE Main eligibility criteria. The petition submitted by students was presented before the Bench of the Chief Justice of Bombay High Court.
