New Delhi: From 2023, Indian Institute of Technologies have decided to consider class 12 marks in addition to JEE Advanced scores for admission to B.Tech Courses. Prior to the pandemic, class 12 performance was considered for admission to IITs.


 

The IITs had in 2020 relaxed the Class 12 performance criterion for admission through JEE Advanced as several boards declared result based on alternate assessment criteria. 

According to the JEE 2020 brochure, students irrespective of their score in Class 12 had to pass exams in physics, chemistry, mathematics and a language, in addition to another subject. This was applicable for the pandemic year.

Before the COVID-19 pandemic, general category students had to attain atleast 75% marks in Class 12 and SC, ST candidates had to secure a minimum of 65% or secure a place in the top 20 percentile of the board results were eligible for admission in BTech IITs.

Jee Advanced 2023 Application Process

Due to the return of final board exams in the current academic year, the Joint Admission Board (JAB) has decided to discontinue the relaxation of admission based on performance on the class 12 board exam. During a meeting in November, it was decided to reintroduce the class 12 performance criteria.

“As normalcy has returned in board exams and schools started covering the full syllabus again, the qualifying criterion in JEE (Advanced) regarding board marks is going to go back to its original format,” the JAB told the Indian Express.

JEE Advanced Syllabus

Candidates who passed their class 12 board examination or are currently enrolled in a program that includes physics and mathematics as mandatory subjects along with chemistry and biology are eligible to appear in JEE Main 2023. Every year, the top 2.5 lakh JEE Main students are allowed to sit for JEE Advanced.

There is no upper age limit for candidates appearing in JEE Main. Candidates who passed the class 12 or equivalent examination in 2021, and 2022 or are appearing in 2023, regardless of age are eligible to appear JEE Main 2022 examination. However, Candidates may be required to meet the age requirements of the institutes to which they wish to apply.

Meanwhile, JEE Main 2023 session 1 will take place in January, followed by session 2 in April. According to the rules, the best marks obtained by candidates in either of the two sessions will be used to calculate ranks. Students can choose to attend one or both sessions. By March, the application forms for the second session will be available.
