Joint Entrance Exam (JEE) Advanced 2020 has seen a dip in the cutoffs which ultimately increased the number of qualifiers, this year. This approach has significantly helped in filling category seats and removing vacancies across any department of IITs.

JEE Advanced is the most sought after entrance examination in India to take admission in engineering courses. In 2020, about 150,838 students appeared, while 43,024 qualified.

These qualifiers are competing to take admission in 16053 seats of the total of 23 IITs. However, statistics claim the number of qualifiers are increasing every year.

As per Director of IIT Delhi, number of qualifiers depends on the cutoff set up by conducting institute which is quite low this time.

In JEE Advanced 2020, general category students who secured 69 marks out of 396 qualified for the exam, while in 2019, the cutoff was 93 out of 372 (25%). For EWS and OBC Category students, the cutoff of 2020 is 62 whereas in 2019 it was 83.

For SC, ST and PWD category students, the JEE Advanced 2020 cutoff is 34 which has severely lowered compared to 46 as of 2019.

Speaking on this, Dean, IIT Madras, V Jagadeesh Kumar keeps varies every year, depending upon difficulty-level of exam and relative performance in each cohort.

He added, “We like it or not, but coaching has indeed become a crucial aspect of preparation. With COVID-19 pandemic, coaching institutes have been shut which has hampered the performance of the 2020 group. Besides, lower cutoffs help institutes in providing a fair chance to category students and fill up quota seats.”
