New Delhi: Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur has invited applications for a free online course on 5G technology. The eight-week course titled Evolution of Air Interface Towards 5G will educate students on 5G Technology.
The course at IIT Kharagpur explains the contents of air interface for 5G like 3G was CDMA based, and 4G was OFDMA based. The last date to apply for the course is February 20, 2023.
The eight-week course will be conducted from February 20 to April 14, 2023.
Although the course is open to any person interested, it would be most beneficial for students interested in telecommunications engineering, senior undergraduate students, graduate-level students, MS and PhD students, and practising engineers in wireless communications.
What will the IIT Kharagpur Free Online Course on 5G Cover?
Participants who wish to take the course will need to have basic knowledge of digital, mobile and wireless communications. Some of the topics that will be covered are as follows:
- Overview of 5G communication technology, operating scenarios, mm-wave technology, and propagation models.
- The waveform in 5G, W-OFDM, F-OFDM, UFMC, FBMC, GFDM, and adaptive OFDM.
- Modulation and coding in 5G.
- Propagation characteristics of 5G channel models.
- MIMO communication essentials.
- Massive MIMO in 5G, massive MIMO, pilot contamination, and beam forming.
- Heterogeneous ultra-dense networks in 5G such as small cells, D2D, and MIMO-NOMA.
- Ubiquitous quality of service provisioning for real-time traffic.

Although the course is free, if students want a completion certificate, they will have to sit for an offline exam conducted by the institute. The exam fee is INR 1000 and will be held on April 29, 2023 in two shifts.
Criteria to get a certificate
While giving out the certificate, Faculty at IIT Kharagpur will consider the assignment score during the course and the score secured in the final exam. Here is a breakdown of the merit score a student must keep for obtaining the certificate.
Average assignment score = 25% of average of best 6 assignments out of the total 8 assignments given in the course.
Exam score = 75% of the proctored certification exam score out of 100
Final score = Average assignment score + Exam score
A student will be eligible for the certificate only if average assignment score >= 30/75.
