IIT Bombay has decided to start online classes for the newly admitted first-year UG students. This came in light when most of the institutions remained shut and then shifted to online classes.
IIT Bombay made this decision even as the admission process for the admissions was wrapped up. However, questions regarding the new session still remained in the minds of the newly admitted students and the announcement came to address those growing concerns.

Dr. Subhasis Chaudhuri, Director IIT-Bombay wrote and posted an open letter online addressing the questions of the students. He said that the first week of the new sessions comprises introductory classes. He termed this session as Zero Week and said that it would act as a gateway to ease the new students.
He further stated that after the starting of the new session, the zero weeks would be the guide for future lectures. The new students would also be guided by the alumni of IIT Bombay. They will share their experience and provide mentorship via an online orientation.
During a normal year, the new session at IIT Bombay is started in August. The first semester ends in December which marks the beginning of the second semester. The second semester lasted till June and the years progressed as such. However, the pandemic has thrown all this for a loop.

Now, the new semester would start in November and would last till March. After that, the second semester would go on till July. This information was stated in the offer letter of the students granted admission.
Before the start of their second year, the students would be given one month of summer vacation. The institute has planned the dates of the next semester accordingly keeping the delay in mind.
IIT Bombay has also decided to help students who come from poor backgrounds and are unable to avail of a good internet connection. The institute has raised 4 crore rupees by means of crowdfunding to help such students attend online classes.
