New Delhi: Government of India, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has shared the state wise list of MBBS seats in India along with details of various initiatives taken to increase admission intake in medical colleges in the last five years. 

As per the Department of Health and Family Welfare, there are a total of 612 medical colleges in India which offer 91927 admission seats for MBBS. The government has shared a detailed report regarding the increase in number of medical colleges in the country in the last five years. 

Following the data shared, the department has increased a total of 3495 MBBS seats in 16 states and UTs under is Under the Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS) of ‘Up-gradation of Government Medical Colleges for an increase of MBBS seats in existing medical colleges’.

In addition to this, a total of 5930 seats for MBBS admissions have been added in 22 states/UTs under the Under Centrally Sponsored Scheme for ‘Strengthening and up-gradation of State Government medical colleges for starting new PG disciplines and increasing PG seats'.

The official letter stated that "under the Central Sector Scheme for “Upgradation of Government Medical College by the construction of Super Specialty Blocks”, approximately 1000 Post graduate seats have been made available".

MBBS Admission 2022: Year Wise Statistics of MBBS Seats 

As per the report, India has a total of 322 government colleges and over 290 private medical colleges for session 2022-23. Check the year-wise number of MBBS seats available in each state of India mentioned in the table below:

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has also shared it has taken several initiatives to increase the admission seats for UG and PG medical colleges in the country, which includes upgrading and approving the admissions seats for AIIMs and other Medical colleges in India

As per the letter, about 157 new medical colleges have been established in India out of which 72 colleges are functional and offer admission to medical students. This step was taken under the Centrally Sponsored Scheme for the "establishment of the new medical colleges”.

Under the Central Sector Scheme for upgrading the government medical colleges in India by constructing “Super Specialty Blocks”, over 27 projects have been approved. 22 AIIMS have been established in the country, out of which 19 institutes have started their UG courses. 

Some of the other initiatives mentioned in the letter include, "Relaxation in the norms for setting up a Medical College in terms of the requirement for faculty, staff, bed strength, and other infrastructure".
