New Delhi: DU Vice Chancellor Yogesh Singh has announced that St Stephen's College will hold admissions through the Common University Entrance Test, CUET 2023 for its undergraduate admissions.
DU Chancellor Yogesh Singh said that CUET UG scores will be used to admit students to the UG programmes at DU-affiliated Colleges and that St Stephen's will conduct UG Admissions for candidates from all categories depending on their performance in the CUET UG exam.
From the next session, all the seats at St. Stephen's College will be filled via CUET and there won't be any interviews for the minority group, said Yogesh Singh. The CUET UG exam was initially introduced in 2022 by the National Testing Agency (NTA) and UGC. Since its founding, DU and St Stephen's have had disagreements about the admissions process.
In 2022, DU had instructed all its affiliated colleges to conduct admissions by giving 100% weightage to the CUET entrance exam. However, St. Stephen's said that it would weigh the exam 85% and provide interviews to non-minority applicants 15% of the final score.
During this dispute, the Delhi HC was contacted by DU, which was thereafter referred to as an "admission row," after St Stephen's refused to remove its Prospectus for UG Admissions 2022-23. Once the matter was heard, the High Court ordered DU College to withdraw its prospectus and use CUET 2022 for admissions.
However, the minority college petitioned the Supreme Court for temporary respite and to overturn the Delhi High Court's decision. The Supreme Court decided not to stay the order of Delhi High Court's ruling after hearing arguments in the case. St Stephen's had to conduct its UG admissions and give 100% of the weightage to the CUET 2023.
According to DU VC, Last year, when it happened for the first time, the university faced issues. As a result, the ideal solution was to conduct CUET twice a year. With a hope that UGC would take the best performance into consideration.
Meanwhile, the CUET UG 2023 will be held between May 21 and 31, 2023. The CUET 2023 registration will conclude on March 12, 2023. Thus, candidates intending admission to the DU UG courses can submit their applications on or before the deadline.
