In spite of objections from the state government of Delhi, Delhi Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal has permitted the holding of JEE and NEET in the city.
In the last meeting of the Delhi Disaster Management Authority, a proposal for holding JEE and NEET was put forth. The meeting was attended by the Lieutenant Governor and Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.
The Delhi government recommended not holding the examinations in consideration of the safety of students. However, the Lieutenant Governor overruled the suggestion and permitted holding of the examination.
Earlier, the Deputy Chief Minister of Delhi had written to the Union Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal, requesting him to postpone the examinations due to the rising number of coronavirus cases in the country.
He also suggested that the central government work on alternative methods for selecting engineering and medical aspirants.

“They (Centre) are saying protocols will be followed. By following the same protocols that the Centre wants 28 lakh students to follow, lakhs of Indians have tested positive for COVID-19,” the Deputy Chief Minister had said.
The JEE and the NEET will be held in September as scheduled. Last week, the Supreme Court dismissed a plea that sought the postponement of the two examinations, saying that life has to go on.
858,000 candidates have registered for JEE Main, while over 1.5 million candidates have registered for NEET.
