New Delhi: The Common University Entrance Test (CUET) 2022 should be considered for admission into undergraduate courses, says Madhya Pradesh Raj Bhawan after citing a letter from the University Grant Commission (UGC).

Raj Bhawan has directed all the state-run universities to take necessary action on the request of the higher education department to accept CUET 2022 for admission to undergraduate courses offered by varsity teaching departments.

A letter to the Chief Secretary, Additional Chief Secretary (Higher Education) and Vice Chancellors of state-run universities, has been sent, where the additional secretary of Raj Bhawan, Manoj Khatri has said that the commission is organising CUET for admission in UG courses offered by Madhya Pradesh universities

He also requested Governor Manghubhai Patel in the letter to ensure that MP universities adopt CUET scores for admissions into their undergraduate courses for the academic session 2022-23.

The Raj Bhawan has instructed the universities to take immediate action on the matter. Further, a copy of the UGC letter written by chairman Prof M Jagadesh Kumar has also been attached.

In the letter, the UGC chairman has said that he had an interaction through virtual mode with all vice chancellors of state public universities in each state/UT regarding the conduct of CUET 2022 exam for the admission in UG courses from the academic session 2022-23.

Recently, the UGC has written to all VCs to adopt CUET score instead of using marks obtained in class 12th Board or score of any other entrance test in UG courses such as BA, B.Sc, and B.Com and similar programmes, Kumar said.

He said that in order to save students from appearing in multiple entrance examinations for UG admissions, conducted on different dates & slots, sometimes coinciding with each other, and also to provide equal opportunity to all students, the UGC has encouraged to Adopt CUET score from the academic year 2022-23 onwards for admission into UG courses.

Moreover, the adoption of CUET as an admission criteria will not affect the reservation and admission policy of the university. The implementation of CUET is one of the integral initiatives towards implementing National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, he said.

The UGC chairman concluded by requesting the universities to take all the necessary steps at state government level to adopt CUET score for providing admission to UG courses from the academic session 2022-23 onwards in the state public universities.

UGC Urges State Universities to Adopt CUET

Although the CUET is optional for state universities, the higher education regulator, UGC, is still pushing the universities to adopt it by sending a clear and loud message to all varsities that it wants “one nation, one exam” for admission.

A couple of months back, the UGC had accounted for making CUET mandatory for admission in UG courses in central universities. However, it stated that the exam is optional for state universities.

Almost 61 universities including 44 central and 17 state universities have approved to accept CUET scores for admission in UG courses. In addition, the UGC is expected to bring PG courses also under its purview shortly.
