CLAT Counselling and Seat ALLOTMENT Process 2020

  • Consortium to send INVITATIONS for counselling to eligible candidates
  • Registration
  • Seat allotment
  • Post-allotment options before the candidate

INVITATION for CLAT 2020 counselling and seat allotment

The number of candidates invited for counselling shall be equal to THREE times the number of seats in each category available. In the counselling process, only those candidates who have received invitations can participate.

Candidates who are shortlisted for the seat allotment process for CLAT 2020:

  • INVITATIONS will be sent through SMS / email.
  • Invited candidates must login to REGISTER for counselling on their CLAT accounts.

ONLINE CLAT 2020 Registration Process will have TWO steps:

Step 1-Updating preferences for NLUs

The candidate can either update the options entered at the time of completion of the application form or enter a FRESH set of options in this step.::

  • All the NLU options (22 for UG and 19 for PG) can be chosen by the candidate.
  • Or select only NLUs

However, at least five choices to give yourself a better chance of admission are recommended.

Step 2-Payment of the fee for counselling

The registration fee of INR 50,000 in CLAT counselling must be paid in online mode through the candidate account.

What are the post seat allotment OPTIONS available before the candidate?

The candidate must choose from any of the following THREE options once a seat has been allotted:

  1. Accept the seat
  2. Apply for Upgrade
  3. Exit from the process of admission

Option 1 - Accept the seat allocated (Locking the Seat)

If the seat allocated has been accepted by the applicant, it will be LOCKED. This implies that the seat will be confirmed. But if you pick the following option:

  • You can not apply for a change later on.
  • Also, even if there is a vacancy at a later stage, you will not be considered for upgrading.

Upload the relevant documents and pay the NLU fee once a seat has been allocated.

Option 2 - Apply for Upgrade

The option is available for the first TWO rounds ONLY.

Also, if you are unhappy with the allocated seat, the option should be exercised.

  • You will have to: In order to apply for an upgrade,
  • Pay the necessary fee to the allocated NLU

Documents Upload

Note: You will be considered for an upgrade only if you pay the fee and upload the relevant documents.

If you also choose to UPGRADE your current seat:

  • The current seat will be locked; this means that if there are no higher preferred NLUs available, you are assured of the seat.
  • If a higher NLU is available, the seat will be allocated to you and your current allocation will be CANCELLED.

Option 3 - Exit from CLAT Admission Process

Choose this OPTION only if you want to forfeit your claim for any seat allotment. If you choose this option:

  • You don’t only lose your currently allotted seat,

  • BUT, you will be out of the admission process altogether. You will not be considered for allotment in any subsequent rounds.

What if I don't select any of the THREE post-allotment options?

If the candidate does not choose any of the three options within the specified time, the candidate in the admission process will be deemed to be "NOT INTERESTED" and his or her seat will be CANCELLED.

In addition, for any subsequent admission rounds, the candidate will also not be considered.
