The CBSE had recently announced that students who took the Basic Mathematics paper in the class 10 board examination can study Mathematics in Class 11 without appearing in CBSE compartment examination. Many educationists have welcomed the move. The policy is only applicable for the academic year 2020-21.

The controller of examinations of CBSE said that the Board made this decision to prevent students from waiting indefinitely because of the pandemic. He added that this exemption will be done only this year to facilitate the present batch of students for the academic year 2020-21.

Thanks to this concession, he opines, such students will have enough time to understand the subject. However, if they fail to cope with Mathematics in class 11, they can opt for Applied Mathematics as an academic elective subject in class 12.

Before allowing a student to pursue Mathematics in class XI, the Principal of the concerned school must determine if the student is adept enough to study the subject at a higher level.

However, concerns are being raised over parents abusing this opportunity to force their child to study Mathematics against their wishes.

The Principal of Manthan School said, “In a student-centric education system, parents’ role is to ensure a conducive learning environment. The choice should essentially rest with the child, taking parents into confidence.” If the teachers and principal endorse a child’s aptitude, they should be given a second chance, she said. She welcomed the decision of CBSE.
