October 16, 2020: Calcutta University affiliated colleges have started the de-reservation process to fill up the vacant seats and open them for general category candidates. The University admission portal for undergraduate and postgraduate programs will close on October 30, 2020.
Calcutta University affiliated colleges including Lady Brabourne College, Maulana Azad College, and Bethune College have requested the State Backward Class Welfare Department to avail reserved category seats for general category candidates.
Lady Brabourne College of Calcutta has reserved seats for Urdu programs. On the other hand, Maulana Azad College has a total of hundred seats for de-reservation.

Bethune College has requested the State Backward Class Welfare Department to avail general students 5 seats in Hindi and 4 seats for the Philosophy department of the college.
A faculty from Bethune College said," The government has asked all state-run universities to ensure that no seats remain vacant at the end of the admission session”.
“Now that we are nearing the end of the admission process, we wanted to convert the reserved seats into general ones because, in those particular subjects, there is no possibility of getting any candidate from the demarcated section" added the faculty member.
He further added that until Bethune University will only request the government for the de-reservation process only after making sure that reserved category students do not wish to take admission in particular subjects.

Bethune University merit list for the UG and PG admission is yet to be published by the exam authority of the university.
Lady Brabourne College Principal Siuli Sarkar said," We have several general candidates awaiting admission in the subject for which we have requested the de-reservation status for those seats."
The principal continued," In other subjects like philosophy, Hindi and Sanskrit, we published a wish list and it allowed us to fill up the vacancies in all sections".
Lady Brabourne College has 50 seats in total for Urdu programs. The majority of the seats are available for students of reserved categories. If the university will not receive admissions for the program, the seats will then be available for general category candidates.

Further, Calcutta University affiliated colleges including Vivekananda College and North City college have also requested the State Backward Class Welfare Department to allow de-reservation of available seats for general candidates.
The principal of Calcutta University affiliated college stated that the university will start the de-reservation process by the end of the week.
Document Verification Issues faced by Calcutta University Affiliated Colleges
This year, universities and colleges have been facing worried situations as the universities are trying to chalk out a document verification method for the admission process.
Calcutta University affiliated college principal stated that the university did not receive instructions on how to verify documents of students physically. The university will soon begin the general degree classes from December 1, 2020. As a result, the college has to verify students’ documents physically.
As there are no instructions available, college authority might come across students who may have obtained the seats with fake documents.

The principal added that the real difficulty will be faced by the university when the student will be asked to leave the program due to their fake documents. Due to which seats in the program will remain vacant.
Other officials of universities are trying to figure out a method on how to verify students' documents at the beginning of the new academic process with caution.
