New Delhi: A team consists of Dr. Prasenjit Maity, Dean-Academics, NFSU- Tripura Campus and Mr. Sagar Bhowmik, Assistant Registrar, Tripura and Nodal Officer, North-East India visited Dr. Himant Biswa Sarma, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Assam regarding the establishment of an NFSU Campus in Assam. The team visited Dr. Sarma on April 22, 2022.
As per the official report, the Chief Minister has wholeheartedly supported this endeavour and given his final nod for the state’s welfare. This is also due to the fact that the establishment of NFSU in the state will most likely lead towards creation of skilled manpower in Forensic Science and strengthening forensic capacities of the Assamese youth.
Formed by an Act of Parliament, the National Forensic Science University (NFSU) Gandhinagar, planned to establish ten campuses in different states and five campuses abroad over the next five years. The university announced this earlier in 2021. The primary aim was to include forensic sciences into the police and judicial systems of the states as per the requirements of the respective law order situations of the said states. This was a major part of the plan set out by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) under which NFSU functions.
As per the NFSU officials, the intended states are Manipur, Tripura, Goa, Himachal Pradesh, Ladakh, Odisha, Assam, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. Along with these states, NFSU also has a plan of opening more than 20 Training Centres and 50-100 affiliated colleges in the next five to six years. As an extension of this plan, in August, 2021, NFSU set up a DNA testing centre in Lucknow’s Institute of Forensic Sciences.
“The NFSU is the only institute in the country that has been vested with the authority to open these number of campuses in different states. Under the MHA proposal, the land and infrastructure for setting up campuses will be provided by the (respective) state government while the faculty, resources and equipment will be facilitated by the NFSU Gandhinagar,” as stated by the officials.
This is the primary reason behind the planned visit to Assam’s Chief Minister by the team of faculty, scholars of NFSU Gandhinagar along with attempts of understanding the crime investigation requirements of each of the proposed states.
“For example in North-East states, the challenges for law and order are narcotics and weapons smuggling, insurgency and terror funding and wildlife hunting. Similarly, our focus is to inculcate forensic sciences in the police investigation and prosecution in such remote corners of the country that have not had access to them till now,” as stated by the officials.
