AICTE Allows Gifted Students Admission Without Exams; Check full details

New Delhi: All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has recently released eligibility criteria for supernumerary seats dedicated to “gifted students''. As per the eligibility, such students will be given admission to approved institutions without appearing in entrance examinations such as Joint Entrance Examination(JEE) Main.

The Technical Education regulator, has announced that the institutions allowed to admit students through this route will be selected on the basis of their rankings and accreditation scores.

As per the norms, students who have scored 45 percent marks in Class 12 with Science stream are eligible to apply, while the minimum marks criteria for reserved category candidates is 40 percent.

According to the official notice,"A “gifted student” as per the AICTE document will be nominated, referred, or encouraged to apply for the supernumerary seat in AICTE affiliated colleges. The student must have at least 3 letters of recommendation clearly stating that he/she is a gifted child."

Shortlisted candidates will also need to appear for a personal interview with a panel of experts appointed by the institutions to ascertain their truly gifted nature and eligibility for admission under this scheme.

Supernumerary Seats: Eligibility Criteria

As per AICTE norms, to get admission without considering entrance exams such as JEE Main, the “gifted child” must meet at least one of the prerequisites laid down.

Students should be a prize winner in at least one national or international-level competition held by a Government or prestigious non-governmental institution.
Students who have received funding from global companies or NGOs pursuing innovative projects are eligible to apply.
Anybody who has a “high-quality” research article published in peer-reviewed journals as the first author is eligible to apply.
A start-up owner or primary holder of a patent which has been granted by Indian or international patent authorities will be eligible.

Any student who has received funding from government agencies for pursuing innovative projects with the NCERT, CSIR, Ministry of Education, Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education or other such central or state-level agencies will also be eligible.

Supernumerary Seats: Admission process

The AICTE will release the list of institutes eligible for admitting students under this scheme on the basis of their positions on National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), National Board of Accreditation (NBA) accreditation, ARIIA(Atal Ranking of Institutions on Innovation Achievements) Ranking, past performances, intake capacity and other relevant criteria.

Candidate applications will be examined thoroughly by an admission committee at the respective institutions with approved supernumerary quota. The final selection will be done by the AICTE’s committee of experts that will evaluate the credentials of candidates nominated by the institutions. Personal Interviews will also be organised by AICTE committee, but only if required.

Students given admission under this scheme will get full tuition waiver benefits. However they will have to pay charges to the institution for examination, laboratory, library, transportation, hostel & other activities as applicable.
