The Liberal Arts and Sciences programme at?University College Groningen? enables you to study a wide variety of academic disciplines and to build your own programme to fit your individual skills, interests and ambitions. Whether you're interested in physics or economics, psychology or philosophy, you can study a broad range of subjects whilst developing specialist knowledge in your major discipline. In the first year you can choose to study two or three of the LAS disciplinary fields (Sciences, Social Sciences and Humanities) before choosing from five major directions for your second and third year.
The Liberal Arts and Sciences programme at University of Groningen focuses on global societal challenges and you'll learn to apply creative approaches to complex problems in a series of integrative projects that address real-world societal challenges. You'll also study Research and Methodology courses (including logic, math, philosophy of science), and you have the option for an international experience (e.g. study abroad) in your third year. The programme prepares you for Masters degrees and careers in many different fields including Business, the Arts, Scientific research, Governmental Organizations, NGOs', and more.
Job prospects
Successful completion of the LAS programme leads to either a Bachelor of Science or a Bachelor of Arts degree. Both degrees reflect the same level; it is the content of the academic field that you have chosen which determines the difference between the two degrees.
A Bachelor of Science degree is awarded to students completing the programme with a major orientation in Physics of Energy, Health and Life Sciences, and Cognition and Behaviour.
A Bachlor of Arts degree is awarded to students completing the programme with a major orientation in Reflecting on Culture: History and Criticism, or Philosophy, Politics and Economics.
Students will have broad knowledge and understanding of the spectrum of academic disciplines combined with specialized knowledge of a disciplinary field and a strong competence to solve complex societal problems.
The Liberal Arts and Sciences programme will provide the graduate with knowledge, skills and competences that will qualify her or him to enter high-profile research Master's programmes in a chosen academic discipline. Job opportunities will depend on the chosen Master's programme, but LAS graduates in the past have progressed to careers in a variety of fields including business, politics, the arts, scientific research, NGOs', and more.
