• If students join the Mathematics program, they can learn about both the fundamental aspects of mathematics and its applications. At Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam they develop fundamental mathematical theory in algebra, geometry, number theory, analysis, dynamical systems, probability, statistics, and operations research. But they also apply this theory in areas as business analytics, data science, forensic statistics, systems biology, neuroscience, complex systems, and many more.
  • Choosing to study Mathematics at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam means students can focus on either pure or applied mathematics. Students will have a wide variety of courses to choose from because the university’s research and teaching cover both sides of the equation. Students will benefit from excellent opportunities to deepen their mathematical knowledge and skills, and to specialize in an area of particular interest by choosing one of the tracks.
  • Students will have the opportunity to specialize either in Pure or in Applied Mathematics, or to opt for the Educational specialization to get your science teacher degree. Each specialization has suggested tracks.
  • In the specialization Pure Mathematics, students focus on one of the classical sub-fields of mathematics. Within this specialization three tracks are offered, which correspond to fields in which mathematicians at VU Amsterdam do active research:
    • Algebra, Geometry, and Number Theory
    • Analysis and Dynamical Systems
    • Probability and Statistics
