- Islamic theology in Germany is still in its infancy. It deals with the history and present of Islam, with Islamic education in the context of the Christian majority society.
- The core content of the course is the Koranic science and the prophet tradition, the foundations of belief and Islamic law. The Arabic language is also taught for the use of the two main Islamic sources, the Koran and Sunna, in the original language.
- The University of Osnabrück is one of the first universities in Germany to offer a fundamentally study able subject "Islamic religion" and thereby lay the foundations for the training of teachers for Islamic religious instruction in Germany. The main areas of research are the establishment and development of Islamic religious education and didactics as well as interreligious perspectives at the school as a place of learning.
