Characteristic of English and American Studies in Osnabrück is the close integration of the sub-disciplines of language, literature and cultural studies.
Research and teaching focus on the language, literature and culture of the English Renaissance (with a focus on Shakespeare), language in context, "Late Modern English", English-language children's and youth literature, American literature and culture (esp. Visual Culture Studies and American Legal Culture), British contemporary culture as well as the English vocabulary and its teaching.

With regard to school-based university entrance qualifications, a distinction is made between the general higher education entrance qualification, which entitles to study in all courses at a university ( e.g. Abitur), and a subject-related higher education entrance qualification, which enables subject-related study.
