APS India has added the mandatory dMAT aptitude test to Master’s verification. The rule hits Indian Engineering, Business, Commerce and Management Master’s aspirants. APS India confirmed the change from the Summer Semester 2027 intake onwards. Applicants who submitted complete APS papers before June 29, 2026 stay exempt.

What Is the dMAT and Who Must Take It

The Digital Master Aptitude Test (dMAT) is a standardised English-language test. It measures general cognitive and analytical skills. Master’s applicants in three field groups must take it from Summer 2027.

APS India named the affected fields on its dMAT overview page. The list covers:

• Engineering Master’s programmes across all specialisations
• Commerce, Accounting, Finance and Economics programmes
• Business and Management programmes, including MBA

Interdisciplinary programmes like Engineering Management and Financial Technology also fall in scope. APS India said an official classification list identifies the specific programmes.

How Does the dMAT Fit Into the APS Process?

The dMAT is an additional verification layer, not a replacement. Indian applicants still submit Class 10, 12 and Bachelor’s papers separately. The dMAT certificate goes on top of the APS certificate.

APS India was set up in October 2022 as a joint venture. The German Embassy in New Delhi and DAAD run it. Its job is to check that Indian academic papers are genuine.

APS India confirmed the dMAT does not replace anabin degree recognition. It also does not replace a German university’s admission decision. The certificate only verifies analytical readiness for Master’s study.

The change lands on top of APS India’s other 2026 tightening. From Winter Semester 2026/27, undergraduate applicants must show 70% in Class 12. Master’s applicants now face this new aptitude bar too.

dMAT Fees, Test Centres and Format

The dMAT costs €150, or ₹16,370 at ₹109.15 per euro (July 2026). The test runs for 3.5 hours with a break between modules.

Indian applicants sit two modules:

• Core Module: three subtests on general cognitive and analytical skills
• General Academic Module: scenario-based questions on academic problem-solving

The Subject Module tests transfer and application, not memorised knowledge. The test runs in English across 10 Indian cities.

Which Indian Master’s Applicants Stay Exempt

APS India built one clear exemption into the rule. Applicants who submitted complete APS documents before June 29, 2026 stay exempt. The exemption applies only to that APS procedure. That covers most Winter 2026/27 applicants already in the pipeline.

Everyone else applying for Summer 2027 or later must sit the test. The rule covers the Winter Semester 2027/28 intake too. Applicants targeting Winter 2026/27 stay unaffected if their APS is already filed.

Registration Timeline for the September Test

Registration opened on June 29, 2026 on the g.a.s.t. portal. It closes on September 15, 2026, with no extensions announced. The first test day is September 26, 2026. Certificates arrive online from October 12, 2026.

That leaves Summer 2027 applicants a tight window for German university applications. Most public universities close Master’s intake by January 15, 2027. Applicants need the dMAT certificate well before that date.

The dMAT joins the existing Germany Student Visa paperwork chain. APS and dMAT certificates both go with the visa file.

Action Plan for Summer 2027 Applicants

4. Start APS document submission in parallel through the APS India portal.
5. Save the dMAT certificate from October 12, 2026 for university applications.
