UPESDAT 2022 Eligibility (B.Des and M.Des) and Reservation
The University of Petroleum and Energy Studies conducts an entrance exam, Design Aptitude Test (DAT) for various UG and PG level design courses. The regulating body has defined proper eligibility standards for all its programs. The following article talks about the program-wise eligibility for this session.
UPES DAT is conducted to ascertain and evaluate the design aptitude of the candidate. The entrance provides admission to the following courses in UPES:
- Master of Design (M.Des) Transportation Design
- Master of Design (M.Des) Industrial Design
- Bachelor of Design (B.Des) with specialization in Product Design/Transportation Design
- Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) with specialization in Digital Arts
Note: For M.Des programs, candidates having a valid CEED Score are exempted to appear for the examination.

UPES DAT 2022 Eligibility Criteria
1. Bachelor of Design (B.Des)
The eligibility criteria in terms of age, academic qualification is described below:
Academic Qualification
The academic eligibility for B.Des is as follows:
- Exam pathway- Minimum fifty percent (50%) marks at Higher and Senior Secondary level (10th and 12th).
The candidates in this scenario will have to appear for the UPES DAT online entrance test followed by presentation of portfolio and interview.
- Non-Exam pathway: Through Board merit and JEE Main/UCEED.
- Board Merit: Minimum sixty-five percent (65%) marks in X and XII standard. (Any stream).
In this case, the candidate won’t have to appear for the entrance test but directly present his/her portfolio followed by the interview.
- JEE MAIN/UCEED: Minimum fifty percent (50%) marks in X and XII standard with valid JEE MAIN/UCEED scores.
In this case, the candidates with their valid JEE MAIN/UCEED scores will have to appear for an interview followed by the presentation of his/her portfolio.
Age Criteria
Candidates whose date of birth falls on or after October 1, 1995 are eligible to apply for admission only.
Moreover, the date of birth as recorded in the Secondary Education Board/University certificate only will be taken as authentic.
2. Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA)
The eligibility criteria in terms of age, academic qualification is described below:
Academic Qualification
- Candidates should have scored a minimum of fifty percent (50%) marks at Higher and Senior Secondary level. (X and XII standard)
- The candidate can be of any stream.
- If eligible, the candidate to seek admission In BFA will have to appear for the UPES DAT online entrance test followed by a presentation of portfolio and interview.
Age Criteria
Candidates whose date of birth falls on or after October 1, 1995 are eligible to apply for admission only.
Moreover, the date of birth as recorded in the Secondary Education Board/University certificate only will be taken as authentic.
3. Master of Design (Transportation/Industrial)
The eligibility for M.Des in terms of the academic qualification is described below:
Academic Eligibility
Candidates seeking admission should have:
- Minimum of fifty percent (50%) marks at Higher and Senior Secondary level. ( X and XII standard)
- B.Tech/B.E in any discipline/B.Arch/BFA (4 years)/ B.Des/3 years B.Sc in design plus one year of foundation/Applied Arts with minimum fifty percent (50%) marks.
If eligible, candidates will have to appear for the UPES DAT online entrance test followed by the presentation of portfolio and interview.
Candidates with valid CEED 2015/16 scores will be exempted from the UPES DAT exam.
UPES DAT 2021 Reservation
UPES DAT 2022 Reservation
- Fifteen percent (15%) of the seat in all the programs offered are reserved for the residents of Uttarakhand subject to their production of the Sthai Niwas Praman Patra (Permanent Residence Certificate) issued by the competent authority of the state of Uttarakhand.
- The seats under this are allotted solely on the merit basis/positions secured under this category.
- Only those candidates can avail this benefit who have declared their intent to opt under this category at the time for applying for admissions.
- In case the candidates applying under this category are unable to produce their Sthai Niwas Praman Patra (in original) on the day of admission then their candidature will stand cancelled.
- Also, if by a stipulated date the seats under category remain/fall vacant then the same shall be treated as unreserved there on.

The eligibility criteria for the international candidates are listed below:
- Candidates must possess a valid passport and visa for the duration of the course.
- Must fulfil the eligibility requirements for their chosen program (as mentioned above).
- Candidates from non-English speaking countries should satisfy the UPES that they have adequate proficiency in English to be able to opt for the program of their choice. If required, an undertaking from such candidates shall be taken to undergo English language training for a specific period before the commencement of the classes. Qualifying TOEFL/IELTS or equivalent may not be mandatory but is strongly advised.
- In case of candidates applying for undergraduate admission, UPES must be satisfied that the candidates applying have obtained higher school secondary certificate (with the minimum percentage of marks as prescribed above) and taken the requisite courses necessary to meet the eligibility criteria for admission.
- In case of admission to the post-graduate programs, the equivalent of the undergraduate degree earned by the candidate in his/her country shall be obtained from the AIU. In certain cases, the candidates may be required to visit the AIU in this regard.
