What is BTech Architecture Engineering All About?

BTech Architecture Engineering is a popular branch of study that is undertaken by those who want to take up a career in designing and constructing buildings.

Also known as Building Engineering, it has wide applications in diverse areas, be it building construction, development of open areas, restoration work for old monuments, remodelling of non-building structures, designing bridges to planning setups for towns and locales.

Let us learn here more about this field:

  • BTech Architecture Engineering  is not only a science but also an art. Apart from engineering, it is a lot about creativity and designing. Other than creating a design plan for new constructions, an architect also decides about the furnishings and decorations that should go with it. To sum it up, an architect also works on the aesthetic part of a building or structure.
  • An Architectural Engineer should have skills in drawing and designing. But at the same time, they should also be well versed with aspects such as plumbing, electrical wiring, air conditioning, environmental impact, sewage disposal, water harvesting, fire prevention and so on.
  • An Architectural Engineer remains involved during the entire period of the construction and not just during the designing phase. Any changes or modifications in plants, due to monetary constraints, environmental factors or client needs are to be accommodated and adapted accordingly.
  • A typical working style of an Architectural Engineer involves creating detailed drawings by hand as well as by using the latest software such as CAD.
  • Even though the job profile of an architectural engineer is mostly office-based, they will have to travel frequently to site to oversee the construction.

How to Prepare for BTech Architecture Engineering  Entrance Exams?

Qualifying the above entrance tests will require a high level of preparation on the part of the candidates. The JEE Main and JEE Advanced are conducted at the national level and are highly competitive exams undertaken by lakhs of candidates.

Some of the tips mentioned below will be helpful for the candidates to prepare for the tests:

  • First of all, get to know the syllabus for the test and start your preparations accordingly. The detailed syllabus can be obtained from the official website of the concerned entrance test. The preparation should begin at least two years in advance.
  • The candidates should familiarize themselves with the latest pattern of the tests. Most of these tests are objective type with multiple-choice questions (MCQ). Also, most of these exams are held online. So, practising more of these tests by appearing for mock tests and solving previous year question papers, helps a lot with the preparation.
  • For admission to architectural programs, these entrance exams additionally test the candidate’s aptitude for the subject by conducting a separate paper, which is of pen and paper type. So, besides the usual preparation for engineering subjects like math, physics and chemistry, the candidates need to prepare for the aptitude part too, where their drawing, visualisation and creative skills are tested.
  • The above tests being highly competitive, the preparation should be done with a long term perspective. Consistent efforts, on a regular basis, should be given by the candidate in preparing for the tests.
  • On the last few days before the tests, the candidates should focus on revising those portions that they have prepared and familiar with. Wasting time unnecessarily on a new topic is not advisable.
  • While attempting the tests, mark the easy ones first. Go for the tricky ones only if time permits. For questions with negative markings, answers should be marked after being absolutely certain. A few intelligent guesses could also be done, where the risks are low. Questions without negative marking, should not be left unanswered.
  • Proper time management is important. Try to complete every section within a certain time frame. Not to spend too much time in a single section.

The curriculum and faculty of NITK civil engineering is one of the most premium ones. The course is well articulated. This particular department makes you fall in love with the branch as well as the college on the whole.

The atmosphere and the overall environment of the department brings about a lot of exposure, freedom and learning opportunities to the students. It is all thanks to the friendly and welcoming nature of the faculty here that the students on campus have established American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Chapter. This is of national importance. This is a technical society which has groomed and helped a number of aspiring civil engineers. There are a number of extra-curricular and co-curricular activities happening throughout the year which inculcate leadership qualities and much more.

The scope after becoming a civil engineer in today’s world is endless. With the increasing use of drones and smart phones for image processing techniques to keep a check on structural health, post disaster analysis and real time progress of the ongoing construction projects, professionals and experts from all the fields like civil engineering, IT, computer science etc. are always in demand.

No student has ever regretted the decision of choosing civil engineering in NITK.

Haldia Institute of Technology has a decent infrastructure and a highly experienced faculty to impart the best of knowledge and practical learning for civil engineering.

Regarding placement opportunities at this institute, you will need to score exceptionally good marks in GATE. Their GATE rank would determine the opportunities and placements in the corporate sector. Apart from the GATE rank, your technical knowledge, aptitude, and skills would give you an edge during campus recruitment.

According to the recent placement highlights the average and highest CTC offered was 3.5 LPA and 24 LPA.

Do not go for Software Companies once you are done with Civil Engineering as you would have to venture into alien fields of learning for acquiring related knowledge and expertise. Instead, go for companies that suit your course of study and would help you gain better experiences.

I would suggest you go for metallurgy if you plan to do a job right after completing your degree. Metallurgy has more job opportunities to offer. With Metallurgy, you can easily learn coding and go for tech companies. NIT Trichy has a great coding culture, so picking up coding skills will not be difficult.

If you plan to prepare for civil services or any other government job, I would suggest you go for civil engineering.

When compared to metallurgy, there are fewer job opportunities in the civil department.

If you plan on doing an MBA after having done your engineering, you can opt for either of them because then it does not matter anyway.

The placement records for Civil Engineering in NIT Jamshedpur are not considered to be the best.

  • One of the primary reasons behind this is the lesser number of companies actually approaching any Civil Engineers at the end of the day.
  • Nearly 60% of the students who are pursuing civil engineering get placed. At the same time, the opportunities that other branches receive regarding their placements can be heightened up to 90%.
  • Most of the civil engineers approach in opting for GATE preparations and later in their lives, go up to securing government jobs.
  • There are students who primarily did not take Civil engineering in their years of study and instead chose to opt for Metallurgy in the same institute they are in.

Civil engineering has an average placement of almost 60-70% in most of the NITs. It is somewhat similar in NIT Jamshedpur too since overall, it is not deeply bad. But, at the same time, it is not particularly good as well. Your placement also partially depends on your CGPA too.

L&T alone visits the campus of NIT Jamshedpur every single year and selects 15 -20 students in an approximate count. So you have several other options open for you via GATE OR IES.

IIEST Shibpur is an excellent institute for courses in engineering, especially civil engineering. It is a well-established and well-known branch. There are several advantages of being in IIEST Shibpur and having a degree from the institute.

My brother has studied there and the points below are his experience at the institute:

  • There are excellent faculties in the Civil engineering department, except a couple of faculties who are not that great as evident from student reviews.
  • There are innumerous projects and researches going on in the Civil engineering department at IIEST. The teachers and lecturers are excellent in their guidance for students interested in project works and show a lot of enthusiasm in the same.
  • Above all, IIEST has gained central status a few years back, which ensures the development in research and teaching methodologies even further with time.

Therefore, Civil engineering at IIEST is definitely a great choice for students, maybe even better than NIT Raipur in certain areas.

I am assuming that you are asking about core civil job profiles. According to my friend at NIT Trichy the placement record for the Civil Engineering branch is quite good. Here is the placement trend for the branch.

Year Civil Engineering
2019-20 81.7%
2018-19 92.1%
2017-18 83.6%

According to the placement highlights of the past few years for Civil Engineering the highest CTC offered by the recruiting companies is around 17 LPA. During the placement drive 2020, the average package offered was INR 6 LPA.

More job offers are made to the civil engineers from companies such as Oil and other related companies. The salary package offered by a few conglomerates like L&T varies from INR 6.2 LPA for IITians, INR 5.11 LPA for NITians, to INR 3.6 for Local/Private Colleges. This is the general trend. It varies depending on the academic year.

If you strictly want a 7-figure salary during the campus placements, then Civil Engineering is not for you, neither here at MNNIT Allahabad, nor at any other institute. Even IIT Bombay placement offers will not look lucrative compared to their other branches.

The actual reasons for which you should consider Civil Engineering at MNNIT Allahabad are as follows.

  • Higher Studies: The GATE 2017 top 4 rank holders were from MNNIT Allahabad as was the 2nd rank holder in GATE 2016 in the Civil Engineering paper.
  • Faculty: The faculty is much better than their non-core counterparts and is highly motivated to make their students flourish in the entrance exams. The results speak for themselves.
  • Opportunities other than private companies – Government departments such as Public Works Department (PWD), Institution of Railway Signal Engineers (IRSE), Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MORTH), National Highway Authority of India (NHAI), and various others who select candidates through Engineering Services Examination (ESE). Maharatna and Navratna PSUs take candidates who qualify GATE exam.
  • Private Sector: Private Companies such as Gammon, L&T not only visit campus but also conduct off-campus drives and recruit students. Although the initial salary will be lower than top private IT companies.

So, if you are genuinely interested in civil engineering then there would not be any dearth of opportunities after completing the degree.

The following are some possible reasons why the placements for B.Tech Civil Engineering may be relatively low compared to other branches at NIT Calicut.

  1. Limited job opportunities: Civil engineering is a field that relies heavily on the government and public sector for job opportunities. Therefore, if there are fewer job openings in the public sector, it may result in lower placements for civil engineering students.
  2. Specialization: Civil engineering is a vast field with many specializations. It's possible that the students specializing in certain areas within civil engineering, such as construction management or structural engineering, have better job prospects than those in other areas.
  3. Regional demand: The demand for civil engineers can vary depending on the region. It's possible that the job market for civil engineering in the region where NIT Calicut is located is not as strong as in other regions.
  4. Economic conditions: The economic conditions of the country can also affect the job market for civil engineers. During an economic downturn, there may be a decrease in construction activity and infrastructure projects, which can lead to lower job opportunities for civil engineering graduates.

It's important to note that these are just possible reasons and may not necessarily be the only factors affecting the placement statistics of B.Tech Civil Engineering at NIT Calicut.
