Students who aspire to seek admission to BSc Optometry course is required to follow the minimum eligibility criteria given below:

  • The candidates must have completed their 10+2 from a recognized board of education with the minimum marks required.

ANS: A Bachelor degree in Optometry is exactly that. A bachelor’s degree in Optometry. Not enough to work as an Optometrist. That requires a doctorate (O.D.). A doctorate allows one to be addressed as “Doctor” but it’s not a medical degree. Examples of doctoral degrees are OD, PhD, and Pharm. D and so on. To become an Ophthalmologist, a doctor who specializes in disorders and diseases of the eye; one would need a medical degree, an M.D.

QUES: After finishing a BSC in optometry can I become a pure eye doctor?

ANS: In India Optometrists are not doctors. They are primary eye care professionals who diagnose and treat patients with ocular diseases by prescribing spectacles, contact lenses, low vision devices, vision therapy, etc. short of performing surgeries and prescribing some medications. For being an Ophthalmologist (eye doctor) you have to pursue MBBS and then MS in Ophthalmology.

ANS: You can join the officer through CDS Examination after completion of graduation. You need to score very high to be called up for SSB Interview and only after you crack it you will be sent for medical examination.
