When choosing between a computer science or statistics perspective for ML, it's important to consider your goals. Statisticians have high standards for theoretical guarantees and usually publish in journals. It may take 5-6 years after initial conception for a method to be accepted and used. On the other hand, computer science and ML move quickly with conferences as the primary venues. Methods and code quickly spread, and people start using them.

In general, computer science is considered a better choice for ML than statistics departments. If you're considering the ISI Machine Intelligence Unit, note that it's mostly made up of statisticians who research fuzzy logic and publish in stats or application-specific journals. Their papers don't usually appear in flagship ML venues like NIPS, ICML, or KDD.

When deciding between a CS or statistics Ph.D., also consider your employment options after graduation. The majority of people in top Indian labs like MSR, Google, and XRCI are CS PhDs, if not 100%. Statistics PhDs, on the other hand, typically work in actuarial firms or investment banks, which have different work objectives.

It's a much sought-after degree at Vignan University. My brother pursued the same and did his MS later. There are two ways to get an internship in the IISC Bangalore.

  • First, make an application to the Indian Academy of Sciences Summer Research Fellowship program and choose IISC in the institute preference option.
  • Second, simply email a professor and try to convince them to let your daughter intern at the IISC.

My brother chose the second option to get his preferred spot.

ISI Kolkata is the best option for MSc in Maths, followed by IISc. IIT KGP is reputed in the technology domain, but for core science subjects, it’s not a good option. If you are interested to pursue pure Mathematics, choosing ISI is the best option among these. It specializes in the field. You will get better career opportunities and exposure in the field.

The benefits of studying an M.Tech at IISc Bangalore are:

  • IISc brand: Attending IISC comes with many social benefits as you will be preferred over non-IITian competitors in your professional life.
  • Affordability: Being a government initiative, IISC education is subsidized and affordable. The total fees for a four-year BS-MS course should be around Rs 15-20 lakhs, but students only have to pay around Rs 4 lakhs. Scholarships are also available for reserved category students, and banks are ready to give loans for studying at IISc Bangalore.
  • Nation Building: Studying at IISc allows you to contribute to the growth of the nation, and by staying or returning back to India after gaining knowledge, you can utilize it for the future generations of the nation. IISCians are increasingly returning to India after globalization.
  • Avoiding expensive study abroad: Studying abroad is an expensive dream that not everyone can afford, with costs ranging from Rs 10 lakhs for a five-year course to Rs 74 lakhs for more expensive universities. Studying at IISC saves you from the financial burden of studying abroad.
  • Family matters: Staying in India after completing your education at IISC allows you to stay close to your family and contribute to the growth of your motherland, rather than facing challenges with cultural differences while living abroad.

Having to know some people from both these institutes, I can say that both have the sand management course but still, there's a lot of difference between the mindset of the two.

  • The curriculum remains the same but the change comes in the teaching method.
  • IISc, as usual, has a research-oriented way of teaching.
  • Whereas NITIE focuses more on the logical and decision-making skills from the managerial point of view.
  • Both are different in the placement domain as there's a marginal difference between the average packages.
  • Also, IISc is a tier 2 college unlike NITIE.
Categories PGDIE at NITIE Mumbai MMS at IISc Bangalore
Course Fee 14.63 lakh 3.18 lakh
Highest CTC 28 LPA 26 LPA
Average CTC 15 LPA 12-18 LPA
Recruiting Companies Wipro, ZS Associates, IBM, HP, etc. Infosys, Cognizant, Dell, TCS, etc.

So ultimately it is your decision to choose between these two colleges. Assess every criteria before finalizing one. As this will shape your career further.

It depends upon you whether you want to pursue your dream of getting a government job or pursue higher studies further. Either you pursue M.Tech from IITs or go for PSU jobs. It totally depends upon you what your interest level and what do you want to achieve as both are very different career options.

  • M.Tech from IISC Bangalore will be a good option for you. This college offers better facilities, faculties, environment, and atmosphere.
  • If you want to pursue research studies then this option will be good.
  • If you want a job after M.Tech then you should go to IIT Bombay and IIT Kharagpur.
  • If you want R&D Profile then you should select you should go for M.Tech from IIT.
  • BARC, CSIR, HRDO and HAL recruit R&D profiles through GATE scores.

It finally depends on you and how you want your career to be shaped further. Because both have entirely different outcomes. Both can be equally good for your career if you are dedicated enough.

IISc Bangalore is more than 110 years old and it is the first choice of most students for Science, Engineering, and Technology-related courses. Seven IISER were established recently with the goal of providing quality education in pure science. IISERs were established with the expectations that they would reach global standards in the field of basic sciences and offer intensive research like IISc.

IISERs offer courses such as BS-MS, integrated Ph.D., and Ph.D. to students. Although IISERs were established recently, they have good faculties and research facilities. Getting admission at IISc is more challenging compared to IISERs.

In my opinion, IISc Bangalore is a way better option than IIT Bombay mainly because it offers core engineering in computer science e.g. Linux Kernel Programming. It is true computer engineering. It helps you understand the science of Computer Engineering and develop a strong grasp of it.

Any science be it Computer Science or any other is solely based on concepts and implementation of these concepts is quite difficult. An extensive knowledge of Computer Science doesn’t necessarily ensure great Computer engineering skills. But it’s true vice versa. So by going for IISC, one is surely choosing the path of excellence through the very foundation of Computer Science.

IIT Bombay is a brand that is known nationwide whereas IISc is known globally mainly because of its focus on core and complex concepts in Computer Science. Moreover the quality and quality of papers submitted by IISc is much more than IIT Bombay and this already reflects how successful it is going to become in the future.

If you're trying to choose between IISc and IIT Bombay for an MTech CSE, here are some features of each that you may find helpful:

IISc:

  • Focuses solely on Masters and PhD programs, providing full attention to these students as compared to IITs where BTechs dominate.
  • Is a premier institute for learning Machine Learning, AI, and related subjects like NLP, Speech Processing, Computer Vision, Information Retrieval, Game Theory, and Database Systems from basics which will take you to places.
  • Provides exposure to Bangalore IT industry through professor collaboration (also available in IITs).
  • Boasts of a big and green campus with single occupancy hostel and students who are more focused on studies as compared to IIT students who are involved in many other activities.
  • Hostel, Mess, and Departments are not too far from each other, unlike IIT Bombay where a bus runs from the hostel to the department every 15 minutes.

IIT Bombay:

  • Boasts of a diverse student population ranging from Bachelor to PhD, which provides extra enthusiasm.
  • Provides a tough competition from bachelor students who will perform more by putting less effort due to their capabilities.
  • Teachers at IIT Bombay are known for Machine Learning and related subjects, but from the courses offered, IISc starts with the basics first like probability, optimization, and linear algebra. After studying ML from IISc, the opinion of the author is that IISc has a little extra advantage in that.
  • Features varied flora and fauna too at IIT Bombay with a lake, a small hill with national forest on the other side.
  • Hosts many events, one of them being Mood Indigo.
  • Mumbai is a more enjoyable city compared to Bangalore. Bangalore weather is good throughout the year compared to Mumbai, which is humid most of the time.
  • Being in IIT opens the door to any kind of company for placement which BTech students also sit for. So if there's competition, there's also a reward for that.

Ultimately, both IISc and IIT Bombay are top institutes in the country, and the decision on which one is better for you depends on your personal preferences and requirements.
