Bachelor of Dental Surgery [BDS] is an undergraduate course in the field of dentistry. This course helps an aspirant to become a dentist.

The duration of Bachelor of Dental Surgery [BDS] ranges from 3 years to 5 years. The variation in duration is down to necessity of an internship or a lack thereof. The course can be pursued either in full time mode or in part time mode through correspondence. India has about 300 dental colleges which offer BDS course.

The eligibility for this undergraduate course is scoring a minimum of 50% in senior secondary examination with Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English. However, it is mandatory for every student passing the final BDS examination to undergo a paid rotating internship for a year in a dental college. This course teaches the students various treatments such as Oral Medicine and Radiology, Dental Materials, Surgical Procedures, Pedodontics, Oral Pathology, Dental Anatomy and Oral Histology and Community Dentistry. Eligibility Criteria

Duration: 4 ½ years with 1 year of internship

Age Limit: Students must have completed the age of 17 on or before December 31, 2016.

Qualification:

  • Students must have completed the 12 years of education in terms of Higher Secondary Examination or the Indian School Certificate Examination which is equivalent to 10+2 Higher Secondary Examination.
  • The last two years of study must comprising any of Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology and English with minimum 50% marks for Physics, Chemistry and Biology/Biotechnology together and 50% in Biology/Biotechnology separately.
  • For students belongs to socially and educationally backward classes, the minimum marks required in qualifying examination in Physics, Chemistry and Biology/Biotechnology taken together and in Biology and Biotechnology separately is relaxed to 45% instead of 50%.
  • For students belongs to scheduled castes and scheduled tribes, the minimum marks required in qualifying examination in Physics, chemistry and biology/Biotechnology taken together is relaxed to 40%.

Eligibility Criteria for PWD Students:

  • The eligibility criteria for admission to persons with locomotors disability of lower limbs (40 to 70%) will be relaxed up to minimum of 45% marks instead of 50% taken together in qualifying examination.
  • Any other examination which, in scope and standard is found to be equivalent to the intermediate science examination of an Indian University/ Board, taking Physics, Chemistry and Biology including practical test in each of these subjects and English will also be considered.
