B.Tech in Fashion Technology is an undergraduate course in apparel production and technology. The minimum eligibility for this course requires passing class 12th/ Higher Secondary Examination in Biology, Maths and Chemistry.

B. Tech in Fashion Technology is a 4 year program and has variants like Bachelors in Fashion Designing. The course is completed over duration of eight semesters.  The mode of admission is through an Entrance Examination carried out by different universities.

The average tuition fee for this course ranges between 1.5 Lakh INR to 2.5 Lakhs INR.

B. Tech Fashion Technology graduates can choose from jobs like Costume Designing, Styling, Apparel Management and sectors like garment industries, textile machinery manufacturing industries etc. A fresh graduate of this course can expect a salary of between 10,000 INR – 15,000 INR which would only increase with experience in the field.

Since B.Tech course in Fashion Technology is an engineering course, the duration of the course is four years and eight semesters.

What is Fashion Technology?

Clothes are a basic necessity and fashion as we know it today has come a long way. This course provides hands on training and knowledge of apparel manufacturing and the technology, including machinery, behind it.

How is it different from Fashion Designing?

The basic difference is in the use of their terms: Technology and Designing. Where Fashion Designing is concerned, the course primarily deals with the designing, crafting and moulding a piece of fabric into apparel. This course also provides specialization in accessory design, leather and textile designing etc.

Fashion Technology, on the other hand is a course based on the application of information technology. It teaches, for example, the style of crafting cloth material from products. It teaches the knowledge of machinery which goes into making a cloth.

Where craft and designing skills are emphasised in Fashion Designing, theoretical knowledge is the focus of Fashion Technology.

After this undergraduate course, one can apply for an M.Tech course in Fashion Technology. They can also do a diploma in many specialised fields within the Fashion design and technology spectrum.

These post-graduate and diplomas are available in colleges like National Institute of Fashion Technology, Pearl Academy, New Delhi etc.  

The minimum eligibility for this requires, passing the higher secondary school certificate (10+2) examination with science subject such as biology, maths and chemistry.

Minimum percentage of marks in class 12/ higher secondary Examination is generally from 50% to 55%.
