• McMaster University offers a Doctor of Philosophy in Chemical Engineering for a duration of 4 years (12 semester).
  • It is an on-campus, co-op program offered on a full-time basis.
  • The PhD degree is a thesis-based program where students are required to complete courses in addition to writing and defending.
  • This program consists of 7 one-term graduate courses beyond the Bachelor's Degree or 3 courses beyond the Master's degree and a more extensive research program leading to a dissertation.
  • The dissertation must be an original contribution to chemical engineering and must also be defended at an oral examination a thesis.
  • The specialization programs are:
    • Bioengineering
    • Polymer Materials and Manufacturing stream
    • Process Systems Engineering stream
    • Water-Energy Technologies stream
  • Students must present one seminar on their research work before they graduate.
  • In the Department, full-time, on-time students receive a combination of support which many include a combination of a research stipend, a teaching assistantship, a departmental scholarship, and/or a bursary. 
  • The minimum course program requirement for this degree is at least six half courses, at least four of which should be at the 700-level, beyond the baccalaureate degree.
  • Students also required to take the PhD Comprehensive Examination which take place between 6 and 18  months after the candidate initially registers in the PhD program.
  • The average salary of the program goes up to 56,000 USD.
