Monash Residential Services (MRS) looks after the accommodation for the Monash University. They are committed to providing all the support, care, and enrichment to make the best of the time for students in the university. Monash University offers on-campus residential options to rental properties in suburbs.

Students living on campus enjoy access to a range of services including financial, medical, and mental health support. The resident of MRS get a parking permit, discounted Monash Sport MRS Scholarship, campus community division services, mental health support, financial support services, and access to medical clinics.

Monash University encourages social engagement, residential events, and activities. The residential programs inculcate the same by organizing events at every hall. This involves social sports, hall dinners, movie nights, weekly suppers, cultural activities, and study groups.

Monash University On-Campus Accommodation

There is a range of different residential options for students gaining admission at Monash University. This includes Clayton Residential Village, Clayton Urban Community, Peninsula Residential Village, and Peninsula Studio Apartments.

Application Fee: There is no application fee to apply for on-campus accommodation. Only once the student accepts the offer, then he/she has to pay a non-refundable deposit payment to secure the room.
Application Deadline: There is no closing date for applications. However, it is best to apply as soon as possible to secure the accommodation.

Offers of accommodation will be given out from late December and continue in early January. Once the offer is made, it must be accepted by the deadline otherwise it will automatically lapse. The students have to submit the following with the offer acceptance:

  • Tenancy Agreement & Tenant Consent Form to the MRS Resident Portal.
  • a passport-style photo
  • a copy of photo ID (e.g. passport/drivers’ license)
  • Complete online Mandatory Training

Clayton Campus Residence

Clayton offers a full campus experience with all the conveniences nearby. The campus is home to most of the university students for easy access to class and campus facilities including libraries and vibrant community life.

  • Clayton Residential Village: is made of six halls of residence (Deakin, Farrer, Hoowit, Normanby, Roberts, Richardson) with South East apartments. Students can have a private bedroom with usual facilities. To inculcate the value of community living, there are shared kitchens & eating areas, communal lounges, and games rooms.
  • South East Flats: These flats are for students looking for more privacy and greater independence. The residents have the task to clean their place with the cleaning supplies kit provided by Monash Residential Services. There are a total of 30 apartments with each having two-five bedrooms (mostly four). It has a lounge room and kitchen, with table tennis tables, pool tables, and a projector screen. Also, there are graduate rooms on the property.

Clayton Urban Community: Six stylish apartment buildings – Briggs, Jackomos, Campbell, Holman, Logan, and Turner together form the Urban Community. These offer accommodations in modern self-contained studio apartments equipped with a kitchenette and en-suite bathroom.

Peninsula Campus Residence

The Peninsula campus comprises Peninsula Residential Village and Peninsula Studio Apartments. These housing options are diverse in their styles and may differ from apartments to houses.

A free shuttle bus operates between the Peninsula campus and the Frankston Railway station. The free University shuttle also runs between the Clayton campus and Peninsula. All rooms are within walking distance from the MPARC sports complex and the campus. There are also local beaches, Frankston Hospital, community sporting facilities including a variety of shopping centers and PARC aquatic centers nearby.

  • Peninsula Residential Village: Peninsula has five small residential accommodation options. Each residence is a little different both in terms of its style and the number of people it accommodates. Residents have to take care of their residence and clean them too, given they have cleaning supplies from Monash Residential Services.
  • Student Village is the largest residence on campus where students live with 7 others. They have a private bedroom with access to 2 shared bathrooms. Comprising a social atmosphere, there are 3 communal lounge areas, a veranda, and a grass area.
  • Bloom Street is where 4 people live per residence. Students get their private bedroom and shared facilities. Maximum students are undergrads.
  • In Samada Street, a student can live alone or with one other person (of the same gender). Considering the quieter pace, there are 2 external community areas and vegetable gardens.
  • Lardner Road is an extended part of Student Village where two houses have either 3 or 6 bedrooms. These are smaller comparatively but prove better in the social atmosphere. The 6-bedroom house has 3 bathrooms, and a front garden filled with fruit trees and herbs. A 3-bedroom house is ideal to offer more independence.
  • Holmes Street is for later year students who prefer more independence. Students have to share a house with 2 other residents. There’s a great entertainment area in the huge garden and an undercover carport.
  • Peninsula Studio Apartments: Gillies Halls has 150 fully-furnished self-contained apartments over 5 levels. There are 8 washers, 9 dryers, and accessible rooms. Each room has king- single bed and bedside table, Kitchen facilities, Fridge, Ensuite bathroom, Desk, shelves and chair, Wardrobe and drawers, small dining table and seating, VOIP handset, and high-speed internet, and Passive house design. In addition to this, students have shared facilities like common rooms, games room, bike storage, music rehearsal room, floor lounges (1 per floor), outdoor BBQ area, laundry.

Monash University Off-Campus Accommodation

There are many types of accommodation available when the student arrives in Melbourne. Many apartments and houses are rented through a real estate agent, but individual landlords or students wishing to share can advertise their rooms or properties online.

It is recommended for students to book their temporary accommodation before arriving in Melbourne for at least 7-10 days. After arriving, they can look for long-term accommodation for which the university can guide them. Monash University also helps students find off-campus housing.

  1. Rooming Houses- Rooming houses have private rooms with shared communal areas.
  2. Affiliated Student Accommodation- Mannix College is affiliated with Monash University to provide housing options.
  3. Private Rental- Students can live with their family, partner, or friends if they choose their property as a private rental. Most houses and apartments in Melbourne are rented through agents. Some landlords and housemates rent out their property or room on the main real estate websites. Advertisements of these options can be found on the websites like Real Estate, Domain, Property, Rent Estate View, and Rent.
  4. Home Share Program- The Uniting Homeshare Program offers in-home living with the old community who requires companionship/assistance in exchange for rent.
  5. Shared Housing- This means moving into a property where people are already living. This could mean taking a room in the rooming house or lease a single room in a shared apartment. This option is best for people who are new to the area and do not have a family network. Many websites advertise individual rooms- Flatmates, FlatMateFinders, Hostel World.
