The Department prepares graduates who are able to contribute to the cultural and music educational aspects of our society.? In addition, the Department of Music contributes to the University?s mission of being a cultural center for the region by offering performances and other activities open to the public.
Goals
- ? ? The goal for the B.A. in Music degree is to provide students with a broad general studies education in the liberal arts combined with comprehensive music studies.? The liberal arts emphasis will develop students? collaborative, innovative, and imaginative skills and abilities, which are transferable to many post-graduation settings.? The performance emphasis will enable graduates to choose to engage in further study in music and pursue a career in music.?

The goal for our B.A. in Music Education degree is to prepare graduates who meet the Entry Level Standards for Michigan Teachers, as set by the Michigan Department of Education, to pass the music portion of the Michigan Test for Teacher Certification, and to function successfully as music educators in grades K-12.
- ? ? The Department of Music contributes to the University?s goal of being a cultural center for the region by offering and promoting a variety of public performances, workshops, masterclasses, and clinics.
- ? ?The Department?s goal with regard to the campus community (students, faculty, and staff) is to engage them by offering and promoting a variety of musical experiences.? For non-music majors these include general education courses and performing ensembles to participate in, and concerts to attend.? For the entire campus community we also aim to provide entertainment for various athletic events and university functions.
