The study of finance is designed to provide insight into financial decision-making by firms; interaction between firms and financial markets; management of financial intermediaries and an understanding of the markets in which they participate; valuation of financial assets such as stocks, bonds and derivatives, and how they are managed in a portfolio; and the determination and behavior of interest rates and rates of return on assets.

Students interested in studying finance should have strong quantitative skills, be able to think analytically, be creative in solving problems, and be able to make strategic decisions.
