The Department of Geography is committed to the discovery, application, and dissemination of knowledge concerning the environment and society in order to help our students become global citizens, environmental stewards, policy makers, and scientists, and to improve the quality of life for the citizens of Alabama by helping better understand human impacts on the environment and interactions between society and Earth’s natural systems.

The graduate program in geography prepares students to pursue further academic study and to work in a broad range of positions with federal, state, and local governments; environmental consulting firms; private conservation and resource management agencies; and educational institutions.

The MS degree is designed to be completed in two years, although a small number of students do not attend full-time and pursue the degree over a longer period. The department also offers a night program allowing part-time students to pursue their graduate degree in the evening hours.
