Our graduates are employed by federal and state agencies like the CDC, USDA, EPA or DNR, and others work in industry, doing biomedical testing, developing biomedical products, or consulting on ecological/environmental issues. Many develop careers at universities and colleges, while others teach in public or private secondary schools.

Whether you are a student or someone seeking research expertise in the life sciences, we are confident that we can meet your needs. The broad expertise of our faculty gives students the opportunity to excel in the full range of modern biology, including choices of six pre-professional programs. While our department is large enough to give you access to state-of-the-art equipment in both teaching and research labs, our dedicated faculty will take a personal interest in making you feel like you are a member of a much smaller department.

As a graduate of our department you will be well trained, but you will also gain a firm understanding of the role of science in society and be able to make informed decisions about biologically related issues. Our department can broaden your horizons because our professors are involved in research projects across the country and around the world. However, we keep a firm focus on serving our region by directing much of our research towards the natural resources of the southeastern coastal plain. We believe this focus to be important for the future of Georgia given population growth projections for the coastal plain.

You can be part of this work by participating in research and other capstone experiences with faculty. Our professors consistently receive awards for their teaching, research and service, and they are considered to be among the best faculty at Georgia Southern. As you can tell, we are proud of our department and we look forward to you becoming a member of our group and contributing to our, and your, success!
