Many Media, Many Studios

Students have the opportunity to expand and sharpen their artistic abilities through practice. We have studios for 2D and 3D media, including ceramics and sculpture, painting, drawing, fibers, metals, photography, printmaking, computer art and graphic design.

Experiences in the studio enhance natural development as an artist as students explore their individual gifts and learn about the world. Connections across disciplines and cultural differences help students to gain a conceptual and intellectual framework for their art.

Our students leave with a portfolio of work, an appreciation of the development of their own values and creative skills, as well as with an appreciation of processes, expressions and values of others.

Develop your Ability, Create your Future

The B.A. in Studio Art degree prepares students for life after undergrad. Many students enter M.A. or M.F.A. programs in art or move directly to careers in the visual arts, working in galleries or museums or as artists, designers or art educators. Still others use the creative skills they developed in related fields like advertising, marketing, public relations and arts administration.

A number of students have gone into professional programs like medicine, architecture or dentistry with their studio major as well as taking the suggested courses for these disciplines.

Our program encourages a strong, reflective portfolio from each student early in their studio art education. Students present their portfolios to the studio art faculty during the semester of their fourth studio course and the faculty discuss ideas for growth during the subsequent semesters.

Active Artists, Active Teaching

The studio art faculty model professional artistic practice and provide a link for students to the larger art community. Faculty exhibit in galleries and museums, share works in progress in the classroom, and provide connections to other professional artists that can lead to internship opportunities.

Students looking for guidance about their career potential can always meet with our faculty, who are dedicated to not only teaching but mentoring undergraduates at all levels.
