The Nurse Practitioner programs (MS) at the UR School of Nursing are some of the best in the nation. It was the groundbreaking work of our founding dean, Loretta Ford, more than 50 years ago which led to the creation of the nurse practitioner role and changed the way health care is provided.

Psychiatric mental health nurse practitioners provide mental health care to individuals of all ages in a variety of settings. As a student in our program, you will?work to?develop expertise in assessment, diagnosis, psychotherapy, and psychopharmacology management of mental health challenges and psychiatric disorders.?

This program is offered?completely online?with short on campus residencies?designed to enhance?access to students throughout?NY state. This innovative model balances flexible and supportive online learning experiences with rich, hands-on practice opportunities guided by our expert faculty.?

Graduates of our program provide access to vital mental health services?across the health care continuum, including acute and community based services (i.e. inpatient and outpatient mental health services, chemical dependency, school-based programs, private practice). In addition to traditional psychiatric settings, PMHNPs are also located in primary care and acute medical settings working to expand the efforts of behavioral health integration.
