The program includes two specializations; nutritional science and dietetics.

  • The Nutritional Science specialization prepares students for health-related professional schools, including medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, physical therapy, and public health, as well as graduate research in nutrition and other biological disciplines.
  • The Dietetics specialization prepares students for the second step in becoming a registered dietitian (RD), a dietetic internship; and for other nutrition-related careers.

Nutrition professionals work to ensure that our diets and those fed to animals supply the substances essential to life. Nutrition combines the study of nutrition, a basic biological science, with studies of economic, political, cultural and biological factors that influence food choices and the nutritional health of humans.

With a degree in nutrition, you can join the network of professionals who have the expertise to provide the link between food producers and consumers, and between diet and health.

As a nutrition student, your studies will address issues relevant to medicine, agriculture and to society at large.

Nutritional Science

The Nutritional Science specialization prepares students for health-related professional schools, including medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, physical therapy and public health, as well as graduate research in nutrition and other biological disciplines.

Dietetics

If you want to help people improve their health through better nutrition, the Dietetics Specialization may be right for you. This option provides education and hands-on training about nutritional care in clinical and community settings; food service systems; and nutrition research.

Completion of the Bachelor of Science degree with the dietetics option prepares students for the second step in becoming a registered dietitian (RD), a dietetic internship. Upon completion of the internship, students take a national examination to become registered.

The Didactic Program in Dietetics at the University of Nevada, Reno is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics , and graduates are prepared to enter an accredited internship prior to taking the Registered Dietitian Examination.
