As a sociology major, you’ll develop an understanding of the complex nature of human interaction on a societal level as well as face-to-face. You’ll focus on the roles of society and culture as social forces that shape human behavior. Sociology students are able to think critically about the causes and implications of social inequality and other social issues by employing scientific methodology.

Sociology Minor

The minor in sociology introduces students to such topics as social problems, social inequalities and social institutions such as family, religion, education, politics and economics. The diversity and breadth of courses allow students to explore areas relevant to their individual interests.

Applied Research Methods in Sociology and Anthropology Minor

The applied research methods minor introduces students to the tools and methods used to conduct and interpret qualitative and quantitative research about society. Students learn to design and conduct applied social research projects, including demography, survey research, focus groups, spatial analysis and other tools used by commercial firms, government agencies and nongovernmental organizations.

Criminal Justice Policy Minor

The criminal justice policy minor introduces students to the history and current structure and processes of the American criminal justice system. Students also explore the ethical issues surrounding the components of that system, as well as the research that evaluates the impact of the criminal justice system. It also provides an introduction to other social systems and cultures as students explore what a criminal justice system ought to be.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of sociologists is projected to grow 15% by 2022, faster than the average for all occupations. The median annual salary for sociologists is nearly $75,000.

Creighton sociology majors have found careers in a variety of fields, including: urban planning, corrections, survey research, human resources, insurance, election research, social work and teaching.
