Research is a key focus of the 22 faculty members that comprise the department. From July 2011 to June 30, 2012, combined research awards to the department totaled $2.48 million, from funding agencies including NIH, NSF, EPA, DoE, ONR, and ACS-PRF. This level of research funding affords graduate students the opportunity to receive “on-the-job training” on cutting-edge research projects. The moderate size of the department creates an atmosphere of close interaction between the faculty and graduate students.
