Our curriculum is shaped by an intellectually and culturally diverse faculty whose areas of expertise complement each other in ways to ensure that students gain a variety of knowledge and skills, including the areas of transnational perspectives, critical theory, social justice frameworks, and interdisciplinary methodologies.

For example, one particular strength of our program is scholarship regarding the body, which engages and influences theories of sexuality and racialization as well as gender. Our faculty also actively work and publish in studies of violence, activisms, masculinities, popular culture, queer theory, science and health. Equipped with strong analytical tools, students will be part of a new generation of scholars who will transform higher education and our world.

The Department of Gender and Women?s Studies at the University of Kentucky will admit students who apply to pursue a PhD and demonstrate the scholarly potential to excel in our program (students do not need to have a prior master?s degree and will earn an MA during the course of their PhD studies). This is a full-time residential program with intensive scholarly training designed to prepare students for a variety of careers, including academic research and teaching.
