At JU, formal majors in Spanish are offered. Foreign language majors take basic courses to attain a necessary fluency in a chosen foreign language. Subsequent courses may be chosen based on personal interests and needs, including courses that explore cultural and literary dimensions of and in the language. Interdisciplinary study is encouraged, and students are assisted in developing programs of study in which courses complement each other. Foreign language and literature students are encouraged to pursue a double major.
A placement test is available for students who have previous knowledge of a language. Students who place at the 300-level may receive six hours of credit, corresponding to the intermediate level of language, upon successful completion of an upper-level course.
Courses in Spanish enable the student to learn the Spanish language and become familiar with Hispanic cultures. Majors in Spanish also study the outstanding figures of Spanish and Spanish-American literature and civilization, and are prepared for graduate school, teaching, government service and careers in the private sector.
Study Abroad -?Study abroad is strongly encouraged for all students for minors and majors. JU has summer programs in Spain and Mexico where all levels of Spanish may be studied.
