Musicianship training has played an essential role for many, if not most, successful producers. Through study in music, electronics and acoustics, Hartt students develop the skills and knowledge necessary to work in the professional audio industry.

In their third year, each student joins a production team of two or three music and production technology (MPT) majors for an assignment that guides them through the learning and application of the tools of the modern recording studio. In their fourth year, each team produces a full-length CD project. The team follows the project from preproduction to recording, mixing, editing, and mastering. The senior project becomes a valuable tool for job seeking.

Another outlet for students to develop technique and gain more experience within the studio environment is The Hartt Recording Studio. Providing recording services to any student, staff, or faculty member, as well as outside clients, the studio is staffed by music production and technology majors. Students are encouraged from the time they enter Hartford to be actively involved participants with the production studio.
