Chemistry is the study of matter. As a chemistry student, you will work to understand the composition, structure, properties and changes in matter. In your coursework and laboratory experiences, you will study the atom as the basic unit of matter, how the bonding of atoms creates chemical compounds, the interactions of substances through intermolecular forces that give matter its properties, and the interactions between substances through chemical reactions that form different substances.
The chemistry major combines a broad education in chemistry with courses in physics and mathematics to support the study, and all material is presented within the context of the liberal arts.
You may choose to earn either a Bachelor of Arts in chemistry or a Bachelor of Science in chemistry. The Bachelor of Science offers a pre-professional emphasis, a forensic science emphasis and a general science/chemistry emphasis. You may also add a chemistry minor onto any major.
During your time in the chemistry major, you will have access to various research opportunities with faculty members. You can earn academic credit for this work.
