Manipur University offers doctoral degrees in 23 specializations and various disciplines like Engineering sciences, Core sciences, Humanities, Social Sciences, and Languages. The Ph.D. course at the university lasts for a minimum of 3 years and can extend up to 8 years for general candidates and 10 years for women and PwD candidates.

• The Institute offers courses in 25 specializations which include Adult Cont Edu & Ext, Anthropology, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Study of Social Exclusion and Inclusive Policy, Dance and Music, Earth Sciences, English and Cultural Studies, Geography, Hindi, History, Library and Info Sciences, Life Sciences, Linguistics, Mathematics, Management Studies, Technology, Mass Communication, Philosophy, Physical Education and Sports Sciences, Physics, Political Science, Sociology and Statistics
• Manipur University accepts online applications for the doctorate level program.
• To apply for a PhD course in the university, the candidate must have at least a Master’s degree in the pertinent subject with at least 55% marks
• A 100 mark internal examination is conducted for admission in Ph.D. along with a personal interview.
• The UGC NET/ UGC CSIR NET/ DBT BET/ GATE/ SET/ SLET qualified candidates are exempted from the written examination.
• The selection is based on written test or UGC NET/ UGC CSIR NET/ DBT BET/ GATE/ SET/ SLET along with interview round sscores. 

Manipur University Ph.D. Eligibility Criteria

To apply for a Ph.D. course at the university, the candidate must have the following requirements.

• The applicant must have a Master’s degree or its equivalent granted to him by an institution approved by the Assessment and Accreditation Agency
• The minimum aggregate marks scored in the degree must be 55% or its equivalent grade of B on a 7 point scale
• For SC/ST/OBC candidates a relaxation of 5% can be observed

Manipur University Ph.D. Admission Guidelines

Admission to Manipur University is based on the score achieved in Qualifying Entrance Test (QET), however, candidates that have qualified UGC NET/ UGC CSIR NET/ DBT BET/ GATE/ SET/ SLET or have passed an M.Phil program do not need to sit for the written exam.

• The steps to apply for the course are as below
  • The candidate must register under the new registration option and login on the official website of Manipur University @manipur.ac.in 
  • All the academic and personal details must be filled accordingly as asked in the application form.
  • Choose the desired PhD course. Application for all the course choices must be made separately. Applicants cannot choose more than 3 programs.
  • Pay the application fee online and print the application form.
• The QET has a time duration of 2 hours and an aggregate total of 100 marks. The exam is MCQ and has a qualifying score of 50
• The candidates who qualify for the QET need to sit for the interview. The interview will be of 50 marks and will have 2 components
• The first part of the interview is about the research proposal and the other is a personal interview
• Additional marks will be given based on the percentage secured in the PG exam which is called the academic index
• The final list will be based on total marks in the interview and academic index
• The selected candidates then have to pay the required fees when an admission slip is granted to them by the HOD
• UGC CSIR JRF/ICMR JRF and foreign nationals can take admission provisionally throughout the whole year

Manipur University Ph.D. Course Details

Before starting the thesis a provisional Ph.D. scholar is required to take coursework for one semester. The course work consists of 4 credits and 3 papers.

The Ph.D. course is of 3 years duration and can extend up to 8 years for general candidates and 10 years for women and PwD candidates.

Manipur University Ph.D. Syllabus

The content of the paper will be decided by the department. To sit for the exam the candidate should maintain an attendance of 75% while the minimum score to pass the exam is 55%. In case of failure, the candidate can sit for the exam only one more time.

• After completing the course work, the candidate must submit his synopsis of the proposed research and an open seminar on it shall be organized
• A research supervisor shall be allocated to the candidate to help him through the course and then the final registration for the Ph.D. program will take place
• The candidate needs to appear before the Board of Studies of the Department (BSD) every 6 months to report on the progress. If any mistakes are founds, the BSD suggest corrective measures
• After a minimum of three years, the candidate can submit his thesis which is brought before a committee of experts which include internal as well as external members
• If satisfactory the committee may decide to either invite the candidate for an interview for further clarification or grant him the degree
• If unsatisfactory, the committee will suggest changes to the candidate after which he can reapply
