As part of your training, you will undertake a series of practical projects, making full use of the UniversityÕs TV studios, radio studios, editing suites and other facilities. In your final year, you will pitch proposals for a major project and then develop work and present it to a commissioning panel.

Practice-based modules include ÔTV Studio OperationsÕ, ÔRadio ProductionÕ and ÔScriptwritingÕ.

The course also includes two core modules in ÔMedia StudiesÕ. You can choose additional theory-based modules from a list that includes ÔFilm StudiesÕ, ÔAsian CinemaÕ and ÔPopular Culture Special TopicÕ.

Work experience
  • All students studying on-campus undergraduate media courses can take up a CV-enhancing work placement, a University-led industry initiative, or a professional and business development boot camp. *By the term placement, we mean we are offering you a taste of the industry which might last anything from two days to four weeks on a part-time basis.
  • In your second year, there is a compulsory work placement with a media organisation such as the BBC or one of the regionÕs production companies.

  • Our teaching is enriched by SunderlandÕs cutting-edge research. We host the Centre for Research in Media and Cultural Studies (CRMCS). In the latest Research Excellence Framework, Media research at Sunderland was rated as Ôworld-leadingÕ.
  • If you were interested in applying to our Television and Video (Level 3 Top-Up) course, it no longer runs. This Broadcast Media Production course is very similar and you can apply to study it as a Top-Up.
