Why study?

If you havenÕt studied Russian before, the Russian B course from the University of Leeds will combine intensive language learning with the chance to study Russian culture, history and politics. YouÕll develop spoken and written Russian skills and gain an insight into life in this vast and diverse country.

Core modules will allow you to build your language skills and introduce you to key aspects of Russian culture, such as music, literature or the nationÕs modern history. But youÕll also choose optional modules to pursue your own interests, from Fyodor Dostoevsky to culture under the Soviet regime and gender identity in Russian society. YouÕll even spend a year at a Russian university to gain first-hand experience.

With an active student-led Slavonic society and much of our teaching conducted by native Russian speakers, Leeds is home to a strong community of individuals with an interest in Russian and Slavonic studies. ItÕs a great environment in which to explore a unique part of the world.

Career opportunities

Russian graduates have proficiency in a major world language, as well as an appreciation of the culture in which it is spoken. They are also equipped with valuable transferable skills that are highly sought by employers.

For example, youÕll be able to research topics independently and think critically about what you find. YouÕll also be able to draw your own conclusions and present them effectively, both verbally and in writing. YouÕll be a strong communicator, comfortable in a team and on your year abroad you will learn to adapt to new environments and situations.
