Petroleum engineers play a vital role in the industry by finding, extracting and processing oil and gas, but there is currently a major shortage of engineers qualified in this area.
Designed in collaboration with a number of companies, this degree will equip you to meet this need. YouÕll study the basic mathematical, scientific and geological concepts that underpin petroleum engineering alongside specialised modules on topics like geophysics, drilling technology and oilfield corrosion.
This Petroleum Engineering (MEng) programme at the University of Leeds is taught by the School of Chemical and Process Engineering and School of Earth and Environment, meaning youÕll be taught by experts in a variety of fields with extensive industrial experience. YouÕll learn from leading researchers and undertake project work in every year, equipping you with the cutting-edge knowledge and professional skills to succeed in this vast and diverse sector.
Specialist facilities
YouÕll be taught by experts with internationally recognised research profiles in world-class facilities. Our labs are equipped with the latest technology for environmental monitoring and pollution control, advanced energy systems such as fuel cells, scanning electron microscopes, X-ray diffractometers, chemical processing unit operations and petroleum reservoir and rock deformation facilities.
Career opportunities
Demand for hydrocarbon production is growing as the global economy grows, and the oil and gas sector is truly international. As a result, you can look forward to a variety of exciting career prospects.
Typical areas include petroleum geology, oil and gas exploration, reservoir modelling, drilling and production, refinery operations, product marketing, operational management, equipment manufacture and supply, consultancy and regulatory authorities.
Recent graduates have gone on to find roles as thermal reservoir engineers, production, drilling and process engineers and oil and gas production technologists at companies including Shell, Total, Schlumberger, Saudi Aramco, Baker Hughes and Kuwait Gulf Oil Company.
